FAST FACTS

  • The Jefferson Academy was one of the first schools in Schoharie County---built by public subscription in 1817.
  • Our current building was constructed in 1937, with major capital improvement projects in 1952, 1988, 1999, and 2009-10.
  • Our K-12 enrollment for 2016-17 is 250 students; we also have students enrolled in the Headwaters Universal Pre-Kindergarten program which we operate in partnership with the Stamford Central School.
  • We are our district’s largest employer, with a full-time staff of 58 employees.
  • Our annual budget is $6.6 million.
  • Our elementary and middle school students benefit greatly from a collaborative teaching model, a low student-to-teacher ratio, and an inclusive approach to special education.
  • Our high school students enjoy a rich, rigorous curriculum. Our College in the Classroom affiliation with SUNY Cobleskill offers students’ college-level credits in mathematics, Spanish, English, business law, and art; we have an outstanding performing arts program; and our desktop publishing students produce many professional-quality publications each year, including our own "in-house" yearbook. We also offer students career and technical programs and leadership development programs in partnership with the Otsego Northern Catskills BOCES.
  • Over 80% of our graduates continue their studies at two- or four-year colleges, with the rest of the class entering the armed forces or the workforce.
  • We offer interscholastic athletic programs for boys and girls in golf, soccer, basketball, and baseball/softball (Section IV, Delaware League). In addition, we offer elementary soccer and basketball programs.
  • Each spring, our students and our faculty and staff participate in an annual Community Service Day.
  • For two consecutive years (2007, 2008), US News and World Report magazine recognized Jefferson Central School as one of "America’s Best High Schools."
